A new study by Rhug Estate reveals UK cities most interested in organic and ethically sourced meat. Croydon leads with 155.8 searches per 100,000 residents, followed by Bournemouth and Northampton. The study highlights a cultural shift towards sustainable food sourcing, driven by health, animal welfare, and environmental concerns, with increasing demand for organic, grass-fed, and ethical meat options.

New research has revealed the UK cities most actively searching for organic and ethically sourced meat, highlighting a growing trend in conscious consumption and sustainability.
Croydon has emerged as the leading city, with significantly higher search volumes for organic meat-related terms.
The study, conducted by Rhug Estate, an organic farm in Wales, analysed monthly Google searches for key terms such as “grass-fed beef UK” and “organic lamb” across 50 UK cities, providing valuable insights into the cultural shift towards transparency in food sourcing.
Croydon Leads with the Highest Search Volume
According to the analysis, Croydon stands at the top of the list, with an impressive 155.8 searches per 100,000 residents – 120.6% higher than the national average of 70.6 searches.
The city, with a population of 173,314, recorded 270 monthly searches for organic meat-related terms, such as “organic grass-fed beef,” “ethical meat UK,” and “halal grass-fed beef.”
These findings suggest that Croydon residents are actively prioritising ethical and sustainable food sources.
Bournemouth and Northampton Follow Closely
Bournemouth ranks second with 122.2 searches per 100,000 residents, which is 73.1% above the national average. Home to 163,600 people, the city records 200 monthly searches, often for terms such as “buy organic lamb,” “grass-fed beef steak,” and “organic lamb meat.”
Northampton takes third place, recording 120.4 searches per 100,000 residents — 70.5% more than the national benchmark. In 2025, Northampton’s population of 215,963 makes 260 monthly searches, with queries including “wholesale organic lamb online,” “grass-fed beef liver,” and “organic lamb chops.”
Other Cities Leading the Shift in Ethical Eating
Peterborough ranks fourth, with 110.2 searches per 100,000 residents. This city, with a population of 163,379, recorded 180 monthly searches, primarily for terms like “grass-fed beef UK” and “organic leg of lamb.”
Walsall takes fifth place with 104.6 searches per 100,000 residents, reflecting growing interest in ethically sourced products. The city’s search volume includes terms like “ethically sourced meat” and “organic lamb mince.”
Other cities in the top ten include Warrington, Swindon, Ipswich, Oxford, and Newcastle upon Tyne, all demonstrating above-average search activity for ethical meat options. Warrington recorded 102.7 searches per 100,000 residents, while Swindon and Ipswich followed closely with 102.4 and 100.7 searches, respectively.
A Growing Trend Across UK Cities
The research shows that interest in organic and ethically sourced meat is not limited to the top three cities. Peterborough ranks fourth with 110.2 searches per 100,000 residents, 56% higher than average, generating 180 monthly searches from its 163,379 residents.
Walsall follows in fifth place with 104.6 searches per 100,000 — 48.1% higher than average — and a total of 180 monthly searches. Warrington is sixth (102.7), Swindon seventh (102.4), Ipswich eighth (100.7), Oxford ninth (99.2), and Newcastle upon Tyne tenth (98.8).
A spokesperson from Rhug Estate commented on the findings:
“This data reveals a growing cultural shift in how UK consumers think about food sourcing and sustainability, with cities like Croydon, Bournemouth, and Northampton leading the charge. Organic and ethically sourced meat has become an increasingly popular choice for individuals prioritising health, animal welfare, and environmental impact. The high search volumes reflect a nationwide priority for transparency in food production and show that people actively seek quality, trust, and conscious consumption regarding what’s on their plate.”
